How a concrete driveway job goes, step by step
- Get measurements and a permit. Many cities require a permit for curb cuts and aprons. Ask whether the work in the public right of way needs its own inspection.
- Remove the old surface, if any. Demolition and haul-away is a separate line on most quotes. Ask whether it is included before comparing bids.
- Prepare the base and forms. Compacted aggregate base, forms with a slight slope for drainage, and rebar or fiber reinforcement.
- Pour and finish. A broom finish is standard because it grips in wet weather. Expansion joints are placed where the drive meets garage slabs, walks and the street apron.
- Cure and seal. Keep cars off for about seven days. A sealer is optional but helps most in freeze-thaw climates and where de-icing salt is used.
What changes the price of a concrete driveway
Thickness
HomeGuide prices a standard 4-inch driveway at $6-$15/sq ft and a 6-inch one, recommended for heavy vehicles, at $8-$20/sq ft.
Old driveway removal
Tearing out the old surface adds about $2-$6 per sq ft, and some cities want the haul-off documented.
Grading and drainage
Professional grading runs $3-$8 per sq ft or $700-$2,500 for a typical job. A sloped lot or poor soil raises it.
Finish
Decorative driveways run $10-$25 per sq ft installed: colors and borders at $10-$15, stamped patterns at $15-$20, and high-end finishes at $20-$25+ (HomeGuide).
Permits and the apron
A driveway permit is typically $50-$200 and is often required for new work. The apron where the driveway meets the street can need a separate right-of-way permit.
Wages behind the national estimate
Cement masons and concrete finishers (47-2051) do the largest share of the work, about 50% of the weighting. Their national median is $27.41 an hour. Among 281 metros with a published figure, the median runs from $17.71 in Lynchburg, VA to $50.22 in Kahului, HI, and the middle metro sits at $27.51. That ratio between the high and low end is 2.84 to 1, and it feeds straight into the labor line of the estimate.
| Trade | Weight | 25th pct | Median | 75th pct | US median | Ratio | Level used |

| Cement masons and concrete finishers (47-2051) | 50% | $22.60 | $27.41 | $32.15 | $27.41 | 1.00 | US |
| Construction laborers (47-2061) | 30% | $18.57 | $22.66 | $28.72 | $22.66 | 1.00 | US |

Add-ons and extras
Add-ons start from national price ranges and are scaled by 1.00 for the US, which is the average of the area's wage index (1.00) and goods price index (1.00). The estimator above can add them to your total.
| Add-on | Local range |
|---|---|
| Add rebar reinforcement | $600 – $1,800 |
| Remove the old driveway | $1,200 – $3,600 |
Does the season matter for concrete driveway?
Weather decides when pouring concrete can happen. Using NOAA's 1991-2020 monthly normals for 300 metros, 10 have a comfortable season that lasts all year. A typical metro has 6 comfortable months. At the other end, Anchorage, AK, Grand Junction, CO, Kennewick, WA and Pueblo, CO have the fewest (3 to 3).
Local pages show a month-by-month table for each metro. We do not change prices by month, because there is no reliable published seasonal price series.
How much the price varies by city
The national midpoint of $6,450 hides a wide spread. 55 of 300 metros come in at least 10% higher and 96 at least 10% lower; 149 land in between. The cheapest, McAllen, is at $4,950, and the dearest, Kahului, at $10,000. Half of all metros are above $6,300.
