How a gravel driveway job goes, step by step
- Mark the route and drainage. Decide width, length and where water will run. Gravel drives fail fastest when water sits or runs down the middle.
- Strip topsoil and add fabric. Removing soft soil and adding geotextile fabric stops stone from sinking into clay.
- Spread base stone, then surface stone. A coarser base layer is compacted first, then a finer top layer. Depth is usually measured in inches and sold by the ton.
- Add edging if you want it to stay put. Edging holds the gravel in and keeps it out of the lawn. Plan on topping up with fresh stone every few years.
What changes the price of a gravel driveway
Depth and layers
A proper driveway is a 4-inch base plus a 2-inch top course. Each extra inch of stone adds weight in tons and money.
Labor share
HomeGuide puts labor at about 50% of a gravel driveway's total cost, so a longer or harder-to-reach site moves the price more than the stone does.
Grading and edging
Grading runs $1-$3 per sq ft. Edging to keep the stone in is $5-$18 per linear foot.
Stone is sold by weight
Stone is priced by the ton, so every extra inch of depth or foot of width adds loads of delivery.
Permit
A driveway permit is typically $50-$200 where one is needed for a new curb cut or connection; plenty of rural counties require none.
Wages behind the national estimate
Construction laborers (47-2061) do the largest share of the work, about 50% of the weighting. Their national median is $22.66 an hour. Among 300 metros with a published figure, the median runs from $15.39 in Dothan, AL to $40.23 in Vineland, NJ, and the middle metro sits at $22.70. That ratio between the high and low end is 2.61 to 1, and it feeds straight into the labor line of the estimate.
| Trade | Weight | 25th pct | Median | 75th pct | US median | Ratio | Level used |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Construction laborers (47-2061) | 50% | $18.57 | $22.66 | $28.72 | $22.66 | 1.00 | US |
| Operating engineers and other construction equipment operators (47-2073) | 50% | $23.40 | $28.78 | $37.10 | $28.78 | 1.00 | US |

Add-ons and extras
Add-ons start from national price ranges and are scaled by 1.00 for the US, which is the average of the area's wage index (1.00) and goods price index (1.00). The estimator above can add them to your total.
| Add-on | Local range |
|---|---|
| Add edging (approx. 1 ft per 10 sq ft) | $500 – $1,800 |
Does the season matter for gravel driveway?
Weather decides when digging and ground work can happen. Using NOAA's 1991-2020 monthly normals for 300 metros, 25 have a comfortable season that lasts all year. A typical metro has 8 comfortable months. At the other end, Anchorage, AK, Bozeman, MT, Flagstaff, AZ and Grand Junction, CO have the fewest (5 to 5).
Local pages show a month-by-month table for each metro. We do not change prices by month, because there is no reliable published seasonal price series.
How much the price varies by city
The national midpoint of $6,350 hides a wide spread. 67 of 300 metros come in at least 10% higher and 56 at least 10% lower; 177 land in between. The cheapest, McAllen, is at $5,200, and the dearest, Kahului, at $9,500. Half of all metros are above $6,200.

Note on derived figures: Installed range spans a basic spread-and-compact job ($2.50/sq ft low, CalculateGravel) to a full build with excavation ($10/sq ft high, HomeGuide). Materials low end is DIY stone ($1.20/sq ft, CalculateGravel); high end is half of HomeGuide's $10 because it says labor is about 50% of the project.
