How a windows job goes, step by step
- Measure each opening. Replacement windows are made to size. Measurements are checked on site, not from the plans.
- Choose glass and frame. Vinyl, fiberglass and wood-clad frames, plus low-E coatings and gas fills, change price and energy performance.
- Remove old sashes and install. Insert replacements go into the existing frame; full-frame replacements are used when the frame is damaged.
- Insulate, seal, and trim. Gaps are filled with low-expansion foam and sealed outside. Interior trim and paint are usually extra.
What changes the price of replacement windows
Frame material
Vinyl windows run $350-$1,500 each installed, fiberglass $400-$2,000, composite $400-$2,300, and wood $800-$3,800 (HomeGuide).
Window type
Single-hung and picture windows are cheapest; bay and bow windows can reach $3,000-$8,000+.
Count
Replacing 10 to 15 windows runs $4,500-$22,500; at 25 windows it is $11,250-$37,500.
Permit
Window permits are $50-$200 each, or $400-$600 total for a multi-window job, and are often only needed when you change the opening (HomeGuide). No permit fee is included here because many cities do not ask for one on same-size replacements.
Wages behind the national estimate
Glaziers (47-2121) do the largest share of the work, about 50% of the weighting. Their national median is $27.44 an hour. Among 158 metros with a published figure, the median runs from $16.00 in Laredo, TX to $51.74 in Boston, MA, and the middle metro sits at $27.13. That ratio between the high and low end is 3.23 to 1, and it feeds straight into the labor line of the estimate.

Does the season matter for windows?
Weather decides when exterior installation can happen. Using NOAA's 1991-2020 monthly normals for 300 metros, 40 have a comfortable season that lasts all year. A typical metro has 9 comfortable months. At the other end, Anchorage, AK, El Centro, CA, Yuma, AZ and Appleton, WI have the fewest (6 to 7).
Local pages show a month-by-month table for each metro. We do not change prices by month, because there is no reliable published seasonal price series.
