How a vinyl fence job goes, step by step
- Confirm the line and the rules. Property line, HOA rules, height limits and any required permit come first.
- Set posts and anchor them. Posts are set in concrete, often with steel inserts in gate posts. Vinyl does not flex the way wood does, so posts must be plumb.
- Fit rails and panels. Panels slide into routed posts or snap into brackets. Panels are cut to length on slopes using stepped or racked installs.
- Gates and post caps. Gate hardware matters more with vinyl, because sag is hard to fix later.
What changes the price of a vinyl fence
Type and height
A vinyl picket fence is $30-$45 per linear foot; a 6-ft privacy fence $40-$60, and 8-ft goes to $85 (HomeGuide).
Gates
A vinyl gate costs $150-$780 installed, more for large or complex ones.
Removal
Taking down an old fence is $10-$20 per linear foot extra, with disposal.
Permit
Fence permits run $40-$150 depending on location.
Wages behind the national estimate
Carpenters (47-2031) do the largest share of the work, about 50% of the weighting. Their national median is $29.12 an hour. Among 300 metros with a published figure, the median runs from $17.13 in Brownsville, TX to $45.34 in Honolulu, HI, and the middle metro sits at $27.19. That ratio between the high and low end is 2.65 to 1, and it feeds straight into the labor line of the estimate.
| Trade | Weight | 25th pct | Median | 75th pct | US median | Ratio | Level used |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Carpenters (47-2031) | 50% | $23.32 | $29.12 | $36.94 | $29.12 | 1.00 | US |
| Construction laborers (47-2061) | 50% | $18.57 | $22.66 | $28.72 | $22.66 | 1.00 | US |
| Blended | 100% | 1.00 | |||||
Add-ons and extras
Extras are quoted nationally and then scaled to the US by the average of the local wage index (1.00) and goods index (1.00), a factor of 1.00. Tick any of them in the estimator above to add them to your total. Treat these as planning figures: an add-on touches different trades than the main job, so the scaling is an approximation.
| Add-on | Local range |
|---|---|
| Add one gate (flat) | $150 – $780 |
| Remove old fence | $1,500 – $3,000 |
Does the season matter for vinyl fence?
We checked NOAA 1991-2020 normals for 300 metros and counted the months with no freezing or heat problem for exterior installation. 40 metros have all 12 months comfortable; the median metro has 9. The shortest seasons are in Anchorage, AK (6), El Centro, CA (6), Yuma, AZ (6) and Appleton, WI (7). The wettest metro is Pensacola; the driest is El Centro at about 3 inches a year.
Local pages show a month-by-month table for each metro. We do not change prices by month, because there is no reliable published seasonal price series.
How much the price varies by city
