How a gutters job goes, step by step

  1. Measure and choose material. Aluminum is the common default; steel, copper and vinyl are alternatives. Linear footage of eaves sets the quantity.
  2. Mount hangers and slope the run. Gutters need about a quarter inch of fall per ten feet toward the downspout.
  3. Add downspouts and splash guards. Downspout placement decides whether water lands away from the foundation. Extensions or buried drains are optional extras.
  4. Test with water. A hose test finds leaks at seams before the crew leaves.

What changes the price of new gutters

Wages behind the national estimate

Sheet metal workers (47-2211) do the largest share of the work, about 40% of the weighting. Their national median is $29.71 an hour. Among 244 metros with a published figure, the median runs from $18.16 in Blacksburg, VA to $52.80 in Seattle, WA, and the middle metro sits at $29.53. That ratio between the high and low end is 2.91 to 1, and it feeds straight into the labor line of the estimate.

Does the season matter for gutters?

We checked NOAA 1991-2020 normals for 300 metros and counted the months with no freezing or heat problem for exterior installation. 40 metros have all 12 months comfortable; the median metro has 9. The shortest seasons are in Anchorage, AK (6), El Centro, CA (6), Yuma, AZ (6) and Appleton, WI (7). The wettest metro is Pensacola; the driest is El Centro at about 3 inches a year.

Local pages show a month-by-month table for each metro. We do not change prices by month, because there is no reliable published seasonal price series.
