How a tile floor job goes, step by step
- Check the substrate. Tile needs a stiff, flat floor. Deflection or uneven slabs crack tile.
- Lay out and set. Layout lines avoid thin cut tiles at edges. Tiles are set in thinset with spacers.
- Grout and seal. Grout cures for a day or more, and cement grout is sealed against stains.
- Transitions and cleanup. Thresholds, trim and caulk at changes of material finish the floor.
What changes the price of a tile floor
Tile type
Porcelain runs $15-$50 per sq ft installed. Luxury vinyl tile is $4-$16 (HomeGuide).
Labor
Labor starts around $5 per sq ft for the simplest jobs and tops $20 for patterns or premium tile.
Tile alone
Tile costs $2-$35 per sq ft before installation, which is what makes the range so wide.
Subfloor
Uneven or damaged subfloors need prep work before the tile goes down.
Wages behind the national estimate
Tile and stone setters (47-2044) do the largest share of the work, about 85% of the weighting. Their national median is $26.77 an hour. Among 123 metros with a published figure, the median runs from $16.81 in Las Cruces, NM to $42.66 in Bremerton, WA, and the middle metro sits at $24.30. That ratio between the high and low end is 2.54 to 1, and it feeds straight into the labor line of the estimate.
