How a garage door job goes, step by step
- Measure the opening and choose a style. Width, height, headroom and side room decide what fits. Insulated doors cost more and matter if the garage is attached.
- Remove the old door and springs. Torsion springs are under high tension and should only be handled by trained installers.
- Install tracks, panels, and springs. New tracks are mounted, panels stacked and hinged, then springs and cables set to the door's weight.
- Fit the opener and test safety. Openers must reverse on contact and stop at a photo-eye beam. Ask the installer to demonstrate both.
What changes the price of a garage door
Door size and style
A standard door with 4-5 rectangular panels is $400-$1,400 before installation; add windows and it's $600-$2,500 (HomeGuide).
Opener
A new opener is a separate line at $300-$900 installed.
Labor
Installation labor is about $200-$500, so the door itself is most of the bill.
Permit
Like-for-like replacement often needs no permit. Opening up the wall or adding wiring can.
Wages behind the national estimate
Carpenters (47-2031) do the largest share of the work, about 60% of the weighting. Their national median is $29.12 an hour. Among 300 metros with a published figure, the median runs from $17.13 in Brownsville, TX to $45.34 in Honolulu, HI, and the middle metro sits at $27.19. That ratio between the high and low end is 2.65 to 1, and it feeds straight into the labor line of the estimate.
| Trade | Weight | 25th pct | Median | 75th pct | US median | Ratio | Level used |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Carpenters (47-2031) | 60% | $23.32 | $29.12 | $36.94 | $29.12 | 1.00 | US |
| Electricians (47-2111) | 20% | $23.76 | $30.38 | $40.36 | $30.38 | 1.00 | US |
| General maintenance and repair workers (49-9071) | 20% | $19.64 | $23.84 | $30.10 | $23.84 | 1.00 | US |
| Blended | 100% | 1.00 | |||||
Add-ons and extras
Extras are quoted nationally and then scaled to the US by the average of the local wage index (1.00) and goods index (1.00), a factor of 1.00. Tick any of them in the estimator above to add them to your total. Treat these as planning figures: an add-on touches different trades than the main job, so the scaling is an approximation.
| Add-on | Local range |
|---|---|
| Add a new opener (flat) | $300 – $900 |
Does the season matter for garage door?
We checked NOAA 1991-2020 normals for 300 metros and counted the months with no freezing or heat problem for exterior installation. 40 metros have all 12 months comfortable; the median metro has 9. The shortest seasons are in Anchorage, AK (6), El Centro, CA (6), Yuma, AZ (6) and Appleton, WI (7). The wettest metro is Pensacola; the driest is El Centro at about 3 inches a year.
Local pages show a month-by-month table for each metro. We do not change prices by month, because there is no reliable published seasonal price series.
