How a sprinkler system job goes, step by step
- Design zones and check water supply. Zones are set by plant type and sun. Static pressure and flow decide how many heads can run at once.
- Trench and lay pipe. A pipe-pulling machine or trenching tool lays pipe with minimal damage to the lawn.
- Install valves, heads, and controller. Valves go in a box, heads are set flush, and a controller is wired and programmed.
- Backflow preventer and testing. Most areas require a backflow preventer; the system is tested and adjusted before the trenches are closed.
What changes the price of a sprinkler system
Zones
HomeGuide prices sprinklers at $600-$2,000 per zone; $3,000-$10,000 total for a quarter-acre lawn.
Above ground versus in-ground
An above-ground system is $0.50-$1.50 per sq ft; in-ground is $1.00-$2.50.
Lawn shape
Irregular, rocky or sloped yards need more pipe and zones and can reach $4.00 per sq ft.
Backflow and permits
Backflow preventers and plumbing permits are local rules; check with your water utility.
Wages behind the national estimate
Plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters (47-2152) do the largest share of the work, about 40% of the weighting. Their national median is $30.67 an hour. Among 300 metros with a published figure, the median runs from $22.17 in McAllen, TX to $51.71 in San Jose, CA, and the middle metro sits at $29.55. That ratio between the high and low end is 2.33 to 1, and it feeds straight into the labor line of the estimate.

Does the season matter for sprinkler system?
We checked NOAA 1991-2020 normals for 300 metros and counted the months with no freezing or heat problem for digging and ground work. 25 metros have all 12 months comfortable; the median metro has 8. The shortest seasons are in Anchorage, AK (5), Bozeman, MT (5), Flagstaff, AZ (5) and Grand Junction, CO (5). The wettest metro is Pensacola; the driest is El Centro at about 3 inches a year.
Local pages show a month-by-month table for each metro. We do not change prices by month, because there is no reliable published seasonal price series.
How much the price varies by city

+How much more does a premium sprinkler system job cost than a basic one?
At the national level, basic runs $4,000 to $6,400 and premium $7,600 to $10,000 for 4,000 sq ft of lawn. Basic means: few zones, simple rectangular lawn. Premium means: irregular yard, many zones, slopes or rock.
+Can sprinkler system work be done in winter?
It depends on where you are.
